“The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul….”
– Gilbert K. Chesterton
Running behind on your New Year’s resolutions this year? Or maybe you’ve already made some, but you’re wondering if you can improve upon them. Either way, these simple New Year’s resolutions are a good addition to your list.
Since they’re simple and require little sacrifice on your part, hopefully, you’ll be able to stick to these. To improve your chances of meeting your goals, choose only half a dozen or so and customize them for your lifestyle.
Simple New Year’s Resolutions: Stuff
Whenever you see an item you don’t use regularly, take a moment to consider whether you need to keep it. If not, out it goes.
Spend more of your discretionary income on experiences than on stuff.
Sign up to get account statements, bills, etc. online instead of by mail.
Simple New Year’s Resolutions: Time
Find at least one activity you do regularly that you can either skip all together or cut back on significantly.
If you don’t have time for something without feeling rushed, say “no.”
Spend less time watching TV and playing on the Internet.
Simple New Year’s Resolutions: Mindset
Take a few minutes each day to be mindful and live in the moment.
Listen to music that makes you feel happy.
Pause a few seconds to enjoy small things, like the taste of coffee or feel of sunshine on your face.
Simple New Year’s Resolutions: Relationships
Get together with a friend you haven’t seen lately.
Compliment friends and family more often (a simple “you look great in that sweater” or “this dinner is delicious.”)
Write love notes to your partner and kids once a week (or more!)
Simple New Year’s Resolutions: Health
Choose one day a week or one meal a day to eat more healthfully.
Don’t sit for more than one hour at a time – set a timer if you need to. Take a quick break of just a minute or two to walk around and stretch.
Choose an everyday item you see often but not constantly and take a deep breath from your belly every time you see it.
