Total Eclipse

“Seeing a partial eclipse bears the same relation to seeing a total eclipse as kissing a man does to marrying him, or as flying in an airplane does to falling out of an airplane.”

Annie Dillard

Without seeing a total eclipse myself, I wouldn’t have believed it. I was one of those people who thought 99% was pretty good. And it was cool, at 99%. But it is absolutely nothing like totality.

Even when there’s only a teeny tiny sliver of sun left, it’s still quite light out. In fact, at 99% blocked, the sun is still 10,000 times brighter than in totality.

So if you missed totality this time (or weren’t in North America at all), use the BBC’s solar eclipse calculator to find out when you’ll have the next opportunity to see a total eclipse.

With all the traffic and hiked up hotel prices, getting there might not feel much like simple living, but it’s an amazing experience you’re not likely to forget, making it an excellent value for the time and money you spend.
